I was first introduced to Bjj when my son was 5 months old. My ex-husband and his friends were training and I went there just to watch and to see what it was all about. I had just got out the army and when I saw it, I said to myself this is just like combatives. The instructor there told me I should do the class and I said no, it’s ok, I'm not into that stuff because I really didn't care for it when I was in the military. A couple a weeks later, there was a tournament that I was invited to and I went to it just to watch and see how it all looks and I really enjoyed it. I thought to myself I am going to try it. Also at that time I was still had a lot of my pregnancy weight on so I decided to do this only for me to lose weight and for a workout. Then next month I started and in beginning I said to myself this is a lot different from combatives. I felt so out of place and everyone was so strong and good and I felt like a fish out of water. But I kept with it. I trained everyday 2 times a day and every day I went I liked it more and more. So the school at the time I attend was Top Dog MMA and they were getting ready for a tournament and one of the girls asked me if I was going to compete and I told her no and laughed saying I was too big to compete and that I could never be as good as those people.. She told me that I should and it’s not about your size it’s about going out there having fun and applying what you have learned. She told me to think about it and. So I thought about it and I decided she was right and what the heck why not. I competed and I lost. I got 3rd place. But I didn’t care about losing it was so great to be out there and doing it and I actually applied
what I learned and the feeling I had was indescribable.
So after that experience and doing a lot of research on bjj and I decided that I know this is something I can do and win if I really put my all in it. I started training a lot more and changed my diet completely. When I did that everything changed for me. I lost over 50 lbs I’m in the best shape of my life. I'm competing at middle weight at 144 lbs., and I have placed in the top 2 in all the tournaments that I have competed in. My last tournament that I did that was very dear to me was the Miami Open, in 2011 I got 3rd place in my weight and open and I was determined to get first the next year in both weight and open. Well this year when I competed at the Miami Open, I did just that! I GOT THAT DOUBLE GOLD! I was happy and emotional.
BJJ has been everything to me. I am very glad I took that leap of faith and came out of my comfort zone and did it. I wouldn't want it any other way. I will doing the ABU DHABI WORLD PRO TRIALS in Miami. I’m excited about this and will do my best. BJJ is the best thing in my life. My son is now 3 and he will also be joining the ranks of training when he turns 4. I love everything about BJJ and what it stands for and honestly I really don’t know where I would be or how my life will be without it. It has truly made me a lot better and I have so many great friends and family from this sport. :)
